Fort Worth Sedation Dentistry

Get care in comfort.

What Are The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry?

    • Treat dental anxiety – Firstly and most importantly, sedation dentistry allows you to get help with dental anxiety. From patients who are nervous about teeth cleanings to those who are undergoing oral surgery, our sedation options allow you to overcome feelings of anxiety, fear, and intimidation and get the dental care you need in Fort Worth from Dr. Schmidgall.
    • Stay comfortable – Even if you’re not feeling anxious, sedation can help you relax and feel more comfortable, particularly during long, complex procedures that may require you to sit still for 1-2 hours or longer.
    • Overcome gag reflex – Along with minimizing your anxiety and keeping you comfortable, sedation can also help suppress your gag reflex. This is really important for patients who have a strong gag reflex, especially when Dr. Schmidgall has to operate on the rear teeth.
    • Eliminate pain – Along with local numbing, sedation dentistry completely eliminates the chance of feeling any pain or discomfort during your dental procedure. You won’t have to worry about discomfort, and you can feel truly safe and secure throughout your appointment at Country Day Dental.

    Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide) Sedation

    Minimal Sedation For Your Comfort

We recommend laughing gas (nitrous oxide) for most patients. This is an excellent option for most dental procedures. It allows you to relax while staying fully conscious of your surroundings. To begin the process, you’ll just put on a comfortable nose mask.

Then, your dentist in Fort Worth, TX will send a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide into the mask, and you’ll breathe in. Immediately, you will feel happy and relaxed. You won’t feel nervous, and while you may feel a little bit confused about what’s happening around you, you’ll be fully conscious and able to respond to commands.

Another benefit of nitrous oxide is that it wears off really fast. Within about 5 minutes, you will be able to think clearly. You may feel a little bit dizzy or nauseated, but you can drive yourself home, go back to work, and resume your daily routine right away. This makes it very convenient, particularly for morning appointments on weekdays.

    Oral Conscious Sedation

    Sleep Through Your Appointment

Oral conscious sedation uses powerful anti-anxiety pills, which may be taken both the night before and the morning of your procedure. You will need someone to drive you to and from our office if you opt for oral conscious sedation, since you will not be able to drive after your procedure.

Once the sedative takes hold, you will feel really sleepy and groggy. It’s quite common for patients to fall asleep, but you won’t be unconscious. You can be awoken and you can respond to commands, as necessary.

It’s also common to experience “anterograde amnesia” after receiving oral conscious sedation. This means that you’ll forget most of what happened during your procedure.

The after-effects of oral conscious sedation usually last around 4-6 hours, but some lingering effects may last for up to 24 hours. As mentioned, you can’t drive yourself home, so you’ll need someone to take you home and care for you as you recover.
