What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a type of cosmetic dentistry treatment designed to cover up and treat imperfections in your smile. Each veneer is built to cover up the front chewing surface of one of your teeth, essentially replacing it and covering up any flaws like stains, misshapen teeth, and other such issues with your smile. It’s important to note, however, that veneers are not a restorative treatment, and are only meant to treat cosmetic issues with your smile. Dental veneers be used to treat damaged or decayed teeth, and your mouth must be healthy to get veneers at your Fort Worth cosmetic dentist.

What Can I Expect From My Veneer Treatment?

After your initial appointment with Dr. Schmidgall, the treatment process usually takes two consultations over a period of several weeks. At your first appointment, Dr. Schmidgall will clean your teeth and numb them, then use a dental drill to remove a little bit of enamel from your teeth only in areas needed to make room for the porcelain. This is done to make sure the veneers do not add any more bulk to your teeth or change your bite, and to expose fresh enamel to ensure the veneers can be attached properly to your teeth with dental adhesive. Once your teeth have been trimmed, Dr. Schmidgall will take images and impressions of the teeth, which will be sent to our amazing partner dental lab. You will get a set of temporary veneers to protect your teeth while the lab crafts your veneers. This will usually take 2-3 weeks. When your veneers have been completed and are sent to our office, you will come back for your final appointment, where your veneers will be bonded into place by your dentist in Fort Worth. Then, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.

How Do I Care For My Veneers?

For the most part, you can treat your veneer in the same way you would care for a “real” tooth. In some ways, it’s actually easier to care for veneers than it is to care for your natural teeth, since they’re completely stain-resistant and will never be stained by food and drink. So to keep your teeth and veneers healthy, make sure that you brush twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day. You should also come and see Dr. Ryan Schmidgall for a checkup every at least six months at Country Day Dental . During your appointment, Dr. Schmidgall will check your teeth and your veneers to make sure everything looks good. Beyond this, there are a few other things you should do to make sure your veneers stay in great shape. We recommend avoiding biting extremely hard foods with your veneers. Use your rear molars instead. You also should only be using your teeth for eating food. Do not chew non-food objects like pens or fingernails, or use them as “tools” to open up packages, rip tape, or for other such tasks. This helps you avoid damaging or accidentally dislodging your veneers.

Do Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?

No. Veneers do not ruin your teeth. This is a common misconception, and it’s common because veneers do require some of your natural enamel to be removed. This enamel layer is usually about 0.5mm thick. Veneers are thin, like contact lenses. Dr. Schmidgall makes every effort to be as minimally invasive as possible. His goal is to preserve as much enamel as possible while still achieving your aesthetic goals. Dr. Schmidgall intensively and attentively plans each individual case to assess where teeth will need to be altered prior to dental veneers placement. However, it does not “ruin” your teeth. Once your veneers have been applied to your newly-trimmed teeth, they will be just as strong as they were before your enamel was trimmed, if not stronger. The porcelain used to cover up your teeth is extremely durable and strong. It is true, though, that this process is irreversible. Once your enamel has been trimmed, there’s no way to undo the trimming process. To protect your teeth, you will need to continue to wear veneers on the teeth that have been trimmed. If one is damaged or dislodged, you’ll need to replace it. If you don’t like the idea of this, a different cosmetic treatment like dental bonding may be right for you. Dental bonding doesn’t last as long as veneers, but requires no removal of enamel from your teeth.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

There are a lot of different factors that affect the cost of veneers in Fort Worth from Country Day Dental. A few of these include the number of teeth that are being treated, the location of these teeth, and whether or not you require sedation for your treatment. Veneers may also cost more if you need additional cosmetic treatments before your appointment. For example, teeth whitening is often recommended before veneers, so that the veneers can be matched to your newly-whitened teeth for better overall results.
