How the Smile Design Process Works
When done correctly, smile makeovers are an extremely detailed process that requires expertise and an artistic eye. This is evident in all the steps our cosmetic dentist takes:
- Complimentary Consultation
Our goal is to listen and understand what you want or don’t want.
Are we building a smile you used to have? Enhancing a smile you currently have? Or building a smile you never had?
All options are possible.
We’ll discuss eight key elements of your smile design, including:
- Incisal edge position and length
- Midline position and cant
- Gum heights and contours
- Missing teeth
- Tooth proportions
- Tooth textures and natural effects
- Buccal corridor
- Axial inclination of teeth
- Tooth shade
If you’re not familiar with these terms, don’t worry. We’ll educate you, show you examples of cases for each aspect, answer any questions, and provide our professional opinion so you make informed decisions for your smile.
Next, we’ll generate a digital 2D smile design using specialized software. This will give you a preview of what we can do to your smile and overall appearance.
- Diagnostics and Planning
This step is one that many dentists skip. However, we feel it’s absolutely necessary.
In this phase, we’ll take:
- High-quality photography with special facial reference glasses
- 3D digital scans of your teeth
Together, these generate a wealth of metrics to reverse engineer your new smile based on specific landmarks and measurements of your face.
Dr. Schmidgall will mainly focus on three categories: your lips, gums, and teeth. Properly balancing these aspects are vital in creating a smile that complements you.
This step takes out any guesswork and allows us to design your smile confidently and in a very calculated manner.
- Preparation and Prototypes
Now it’s time to test drive your new smile.
To begin, we’ll prepare your teeth in the most conservative way possible. This is achieved by working closely with a ceramist and only reducing the tooth as needed.
Dr. Schmidgall will craft custom prototypes in the shape, texture, and color of the final restorations. These will be placed over your prepared teeth and worn for roughly 3-4 weeks. The material of these prototypes can be modified if you’d like to change any aspect before the final restorations are made.
Once you are happy with the result, we’ll take a 3D scan of the final prototypes so the ceramist can copy this for your final restorations.
- Place New Smile
It’s the day you’ve been waiting for!
We’ll remove the prototypes then carefully bond your new restorations in place. We’ll balance your bite, polish your teeth, and go over instructions on caring for your new smile.
A few weeks later, you’ll come back for a follow up for an exam and to make any fine-tune adjustments if needed.
You’ll get to enjoy your beautiful smile for many, many years to come!
As you can see, this process is complex. But your Fort Worth dentist has spent years meticulously crafting it with technology, collaboration, and cutting edge protocols to give you the best outcome.

Teeth whitening is usually recommended as part of the smile design process at Country Day Dental. At our office, Dr. Ryan Schmidgall offers fast, effective in-office teeth whitening with Zoom! In just one appointment, you can brighten your smile by 5-10 shades, and get rid of pesky stains and discoloration. Teeth whitening is affordable, too, which makes it a great way to get started with cosmetic dentistry in Fort Worth, even if you’re on a tight budget.
Veneers are very thin, tooth-shaped pieces of porcelain that fit over your teeth. They are designed to completely cover up the front chewing surfaces of your teeth. That means veneers can be used to treat a wide variety of problems with your smile, including gaps between teeth, misshapen teeth, severe stains, and more. Veneers are also very durable, long-lasting, and require minimal special care, which makes them a very popular choice for smile design in Fort Worth.
Dental bonding is similar to veneers, and can treat many of the same issues. However, unlike porcelain veneers, the material is not ass strong or color stable so it may chip and stain over time. The process is typically non-invasive, which means it doesn’t involve the removal of any natural tooth material. In the dental bonding process, Dr. Schmidgall will use a special tooth-colored resin to rebuild and reshape your teeth. This is similar to the material that’s used for tooth-colored fillings. Dental bonding is a fast, more affordable in the short run, and non-invasive way to cover up cosmetic problems with your teeth.
A porcelain dental crown is designed to cover your tooth up all the way down to the gum line, and cover up and protect the remaining tooth. Dental crowns may be a good option for restoring your smile if you also have oral health issues like cavities, broken teeth, or infected teeth. Not only will your new crown protect your oral health, but it will also enhance your smile.
If you’ve lost one or more teeth, dental implants may be recommended as part of your smile design treatment. Dental implants consist of a metal post (implant) and a false tooth (implant restoration). They are the most natural, long-lasting, and durable option for replacing missing teeth, with a lifespan of 20 years or more with the proper care.
If you’re missing a row of one or more teeth, a dental bridge may be right for you. Bridges use two dental crowns that attach to healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile. Between these crowns, one or more false teeth are suspended, “bridging” the gap and restoring your teeth. Bridges are made from lifelike porcelain, feel natural when you chew, and are a fantastic option for restoring your smile.
If you have a “gummy” smile or have other problems with how your gums and teeth look, gum recontouring may be a good option for you. As part of your smile design plan, Dr. Schmidgall can reshape your gums to make your teeth look more even and appealing, and boost your self-confidence.
Sometimes, Invisalign may be recommended as part of your smile design process. Invisalign helps straighten your smile and improves your oral health, too. And best of all, the aligners are removable, don’t affect your appearance, and work quickly. Many Invisalign patients can be treated in less than a year.
