Implant-Retained Dentures FAQs

  • What Are Implant-Retained Dentures?

Implant-retained dentures are an alternative to traditional dentures. While traditional dentures are held in place over your gums using friction, implant-retained dentures clip onto a series of 4-6 dental implants

Because of this, implant-retained dentures have an extremely strong hold, and they look and feel more natural than traditional dentures. If you’ve lost most of your teeth and need a full mouth restoration, implant-retained dentures from Dr. Schmidgall are the best long-term solution.

  • What Are The Benefits of Implant-Retained Dentures?

Compared to traditional dentures, implant-retained dentures have a number of benefits. First, they have a much more secure hold, and they look and feel more natural than traditional dentures, providing you with more confidence about your smile.

Implant-retained dentures also last much longer than traditional dentures, and they help strengthen and support your jaw bone. This prevents bone resorption, which is a common issue that affects patients who have lost most of their teeth and wear traditional dentures.

  • What Can I Expect From The Implant-Retained Dentures Process?

Not sure what to expect from the process of getting implant-retained dentures? Here’s a brief overview. The process starts with a comprehensive consultation at our office, where Dr. Schmidgall will determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. If you have teeth that must be extracted, this must be done before your implants can be placed.

If you are approved, your next appointment will be scheduled. At this appointment, you’ll have a series of 4-6 dental implants placed into your mouth. Dr. Schmidgall will create openings in your jaw, then place each implant precisely based on your treatment plan.

You’ll get a temporary set of dentures to wear while your implants heal and bond with the jaw bone. This process, called “osseointegration,” can take up to 6 months.

After your implants have healed, you’ll come in for a second surgery. The tops of your implants will be exposed and metal collars will be placed on them to guide the healing process. These are worn for 10-14 days, then replaced with “abutments.”

Once the abutments have been placed, Dr. Schmidgall will take impressions of your implants and gums, which will be used to create your permanent set of implant-retained dentures.

Finally, you will schedule your last appointment. Dr. Schmidgall will check the fit of your implant-supported dentures. If everything looks good, your new teeth will be securely attached to your dental implants. Dr. Schmidgall will provide you with some information about how to care for your new smile, then send you home with your brand-new, beautiful set of teeth.
